Abstract
In the third volume of his novel trilogy written between 1891 and 1903, Huysmans shows his hero Durtal leaving Paris for Chartres. There, he investigates the cathedral and deciphers its sacred meaning. This work of hermeneutics takes him away from his disorientated existence. The conflict between hermeneutics and ennui which attacks him outside Notre-Dame creates the story tension. Based on Christian symbolics, a lapsed knowledge which Huysmans dreams of restoring, hermeneutics establishes a semiosis universalis where signs and substance are gathered. Of course this activity surfing between science and insanity lasts only the time of a stay (in the cathedral) for Durtal, and the time of a novel (The Cathedral) for the author.
